The UTZON Project. Speaking with stones ...

Todo comienza con la fascinacion de Gunnar Friel por Can Lis, una casa construida por Jorn Utzon en Mallorca (1972) como residencia de su familia, después de haberse convertido en un referente internacional con la Opera de Sydney (1957-1973). Es un edificio site specific, que aparece como un espacio optico, casi una escultura. El video es una investigacion personal sobre el material y la memoria, un video-diario para buscar el espiritu de la casa. Espacios del adentro y el afuera, lo efimero, los vientos y las luces, los pinos y las sombras y, sobre todo, la piedra de marés. Las sutilezas del arquitecto fusionan los elementos, las temperaturas o los reflejos del mar que van y vienen. La sensibilidad de Utzon se muestra con toda su discreción en esta obra site specific. La estima y la escucha del arquitecto del locus lo estimulan para ordenar los cuatro pabellones de la casa, y para fijar en marés las privilegiadas vistas al mar siguiendo el camino del sol. El video es un recorrido atento por las superficies y los lugares, por el paso del tiempo y por el tiempo sostenido, por los días que pasan que han madurado las paredes y las estancias. El material evocado y protagonista es el marés, la piedra propia del lugar: Santanyí. El marés es una piedra que tiene, entre otras, unas singulares propiedades sonoras y musicales.Como es habitual en las investigaciones y obras de Friel, el video incluye una serie de entrevistas, como con el artista Xim Llompart o el arquitecto Francisco Cifuentes de Aulets arquitectes (estudio de arquitectura que trabajó en la rehabilitación de la casa en 2012). También hay una singular entrevista con la hija de Utzon, Lin.


It all begins with Gunnar Friel`s fascination with Can Lis, a house built by Jorn Utzon in Mallorca (1972) as a residence for his family, after having become an international reference with the Sydney Opera House (1957-1973). It is a sitespecific building, that appears as an optical space, nearly a sculpture. The video is a personal investigation about material and memory, a video diary in search of the spirit of the house. Spaces of inside and outside, the ephemeral, the winds and the lights, the pines and the shadows and, above all, the marés stone. The architect's subtleties merge the elements, the temperatures or the reflections of the sea that come and go. Utzon's sensitivity is shown in all its discretion in this site-specific work. The architect's esteem and listening to the locus that stimulate him to arrange the four pavilions of the house, and to fix in marés the privileged views of the sea following the path of the sun. The video is an attentive journey through surfaces and places, through the passage of time and sustained time, through the passing days that have matured the walls and the rooms. The material evoked and the protagonist is the marés, the stone of the place: Santanyí. Marés is a stone that has, among other things, unique sonorous and musical properties. As usual in Friel's research and works, the video includes a series of interviews. Like with the artist Xim Llompart and the architect Francisco Cifuentes of Aulets Arquitects (the studio that worked on the renovation of the house in 2012). There is also a unique interview with Utzon's daughter Lin.

Jaume Reus


Jaume Reus, Art Historian and Independent Curator has been director of the Art Center Santa Monica in Barcelona and has worked in museums and contemporary art institutions such as Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró and Es Baluard Museum of Modern Art Palma. He has taught at Universitat de les Illes Balears, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Universidad Central del Ecuador. He curated international exhibition projects in Mexico, Equador, France and Germany.
