Gunnar Friel (*1967 in Cologne) graduated Design at the University
Düsseldorf and a Master of Fine Arts in his postgraduate studies
at the Academy of Media Art Cologne (Class of Prof. Valie Export, Prof. David Larcher
and Prof. Heide Hagebölling) before working together with Anja Vormann
in Düsseldorf since 2001. As Vormann / Friel they made interventions and installations
in public spaces – concept based works, that deal with space and architecture,
reflecting representations through digital media.

Gunnar Friel has exhibited internationally and received several fellowships and prizes,
amongst others: Ministère de la Culture DRAC Alsac and Ecole Superieure des Arts
Strasbourg (1997), Förderpreis für Bildende Kunst der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf (2003),
H.W. & J. Hector Prize for Contemporary Art, Kunsthalle Mannheim (2004), German Prize
for Video Art Marl, Special Award (2006), Fundación Caixa / Sa Nostra Media Art Fellowship
for Spain (2009), OrganHaus Association Chongqing China (2013) and Triangle International
Research Program Centro University Mexico City (2015).

From 2007 to 2012 he has taught Video and Digital Media at the Düsseldorf University
of Applied Sciences - Peter Behrens School of Arts at the faculty of Design and has become
member of the Institute of Image-Media since 2012. In 2012 and 2014 he was member of
the jury of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship
Foundation). He has lectured in various international and interdisciplinary contexts,
2012 - 2013 at the BAU Escuela Superior de Diseño Barcelona, the Massana School
of Art and Design in Barcelona and the Universidad del Norte, Baranquilla, Colombia.

In 2014 Gunnar Friel was teaching as Professor for Moving Images at the Münster University
of Applied Sciences and since 2015 he is working as professor for Video and Digital Media
at Centro University Mexico City.

In his artistic practice and teaching he investigates different qualities of spaces
and their relationship to material and digital technology. His work results in media based
objects and installations, spaces of video, sound and communication in public urban contexts,
landscapes or galleries. His conceptual approach leads into questions about
digital media and social practice.
